September 18, 2013

With rain predicted at Yellowstone today, a change in plans led us East to Cody.  The plans included an oil change for the van at 4200 miles in 3 weeks.  Driving 75 mph plus for hours on end tends to be hard on the oil.
When you wake up at 66 hundred feet you never know what to expect.  A September 18th view of the mountain top across the road isn't quite what we expected.

As we headed East towards Cody we dropped about 700 feet and the valley widened some leaving the dusting behind.

For being as high up in the middle of September, notice that you see the mountain tops, and also a rich green on the valley floor.

This one's for the ranchers in the crowd. A fencepost to keep the cattle in, and a home overlooking all that you own including a great view of the mountains on the back side.

On the way into town we started driving alongside Bill Cody Reservoir which meant that there had to be a dam somewhere.  Another place on the National Historic Register.

Completed in 1910 it claimed the record as the worlds tallest dam at 360 feet which stood for 25 years until the Hoover Dam doubled its height in 1935.

The wind through the valley helped to improve the mileage.

As we were leaving the dam, a man told us about an Elk sighting a few miles back, where we had already passed.  About 8 miles back we found them.  At first I was straining the zoom on the pocket camera until I noticed a road on the other side allowing closer pictures.  After driving another 5 miles around I started shooting again.

They were not really moving around much except for a couple of big boys wanting to stir up some trouble.  The one on the right seemed to be doing most of the prancing around.

With that rack you don't really wonder why there were no real skirmishes.

While in Cody we picked the Buffalo Bill Center to visit and stayed until closing.
This is a wonderful place and certainly we could spend much more time than we did.
Visit the website if you would like a sample  Buffalo Bill Center

Just inside the door was an opportunity to buy a raffle ticket for this 540 horsepower, 1970 Chevelle SS with a 5 speed transmission.  Tom bought a ticket and his name will be drawn on September 21st by Prince Albert II of Monaco.
He really doesn't think that he will have "A need for speed" so he is thinking that he will put the names of his children into a drawing to win...an "Atta Boy or Atta Girl" award for being such a great spouse.  The grand prize will be the opportunity to wash it once a week.  It just doesn't get any better than that.

A stagecoach used by Bill during his touring days.

The wagon actually used by Bill at his TE ranch that was located about 30 miles SW of Cody. (except for the box in front)

There is a permanent firearm exhibition located there with
many old and new models from many gun makers.

This is the house that Bill lived in for a while during some of his younger years.  It was acquired in 1946 and moved to Cody.  It has been fixed up a bit on the outside.

A monument to Buffalo Bill.  He was best known as a Scout and a Buffalo hunter.

Looks like a great place for a Boy Scout to spend a week.

Before we got back to our cabin, the mountains were starting to turn white again.  It was 38 degrees at 6600 feet, but certainly colder above.
