One of the mined natural resources is coal. There were train loads moving either North to an electricity plant, or south to sell out of state.
The further south towards Cheyenne that we got, the natural resource changed. We saw both smaller individually owned oil wells and also some larger operations for corporate profit. One doesn't need to wonder why Wyoming has no state income tax. So sad that the large oil companies might only be held to the single digit billions of profit each year. There is an oil refinery in Cheyenne.
Also on the way south from Gillette we stopped for a look at the Oregon Trail.
This section of the trail is known as t OregonTrail Ruts, a historic area. After several years of wagons passing through this area, the rock was worn down by wagon wheels. The choice of crossing rocky areas instead of the plains was necessitated by not being able to cross the wide North Platte River.
Grammie is taking a break on the Oregon Trail after many days of hardship along our journey. Oops, she's smiling!
Below, a couple of the names of people who carved their name into the register on their way to either Washington, looking for new opportunities; to Sacramento looking for financial success; or to Salt Lake City looking for religious freedom.
Grammie isn't lost anymore.

Thank you! I now know where your have been. Your blogspot and running commentary (is this Alice or Tom??? or both doing a great job?) Very friendly and works for all ages. This is a trip Joel & would like to take, but we hate driving long distances.
I've followed a few maps of the meanderings of explorers referenced in the blog. Given you mentioned Lewis & Clark, who actually started in Washington D.C. with Jeffersonian dollars, you must travel the Columbia river Gorge from Hood River to Portland/Vancouver WA. There is a small, though very significant statue of Sacajawea in Washington Park, at the foot of the Rose gardens in Portland. One more place in Portland. It is Voodoo Donuts near 3rd SE and Burnside. Google them. If your return trip swings to the SW and heads near Scottsdale, we are at our AZ house off and on from Sept 26 to Oct 28. But for 6 days in Bryce, and meeting friends in La Jolla the 15-25. By the by, I think we are cousins by, marriage - recent marriage.
