September 10, 2013

Today we left Rapid City and traveled thru Sturgis where we went to the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame.  Lots of pictures of bikes for my son, and sons-in-law who like bikes.  Why did we go there...I don't even own a bike.  I used to own a 1980 Yamaha but that is gone now.

Just before we got to Sturgis, we stopped at the Black Hills National Cemetery.  It is known as the Arlington of the West.  As we were passing through we remembered that tomorrow (Wed) is 9/11.

Caught Grammie heading into the Museum

Dave Zien, a former State Senator rode this bike over a million miles.

If my oldest brother sees this,  he may have a little smile.

After another hours drive, we made it to Devils Tower National Monument.  Another freebie for those that have a National Senior Park Pass.

One of the best pics Tom took out the window of a moving vehicle.

We heard one Ranger comment that the top was flat.

On our walk around the base on the Red Beds Trail we found Grammie again.

Shades of Green down in the meadow

Grammie again in the red layer below the tower.

A different view around the back side.

No this isn't Tom.  Momma didn't raise no fools.

Eventually more pieces of the tower will fall away.

A planned burn was done in May and with several rains
the ground vegetation made a great recovery.

We did manage to make the 2.8 mile Red Bed Trail walk around the tower, went to the visitors center and then went back and walked the 1.3 mile Tower trail closer to the monument.  Great exercise.

We got to Gillette to check in to the overnight accomodations and the girl at the desk said that we got a free upgrade.  Tom jokingly said "Does that mean we can have a party?"  The room is a family suite that has a 2nd bedroom with 2 double/twin bunkbeds that sleeps 6.  If you get here by sundown, we'll take care of ya.  Bring Lobster.

Now that the blog is done for today we can hit the hot tub and pool.

Tomorrow, Grammie gets to hug her son.
