March 16, 2018 - Austin

Today was a fairly short day on the road, about 130 miles to Austin from the west side of Houston.  On arrival in the city, we went straight to the Capitol for a tour (our 37th).

The top of the rotunda is 215 feet.  Being the 5 star state, the name Texas fits in well.

First time we have seen the State Treasurers Office behind bars.

The House Chambers were large.  150 members with each having about 200,000 people in their district.

The House is all business. Any member who wishes to speak may with no time limit; however, while at the podium he/she must stay on topic with no food or drink (not allowed in chambers), must remain standing and no breaks of any kind.  If it happens, they are finished and sent back to their seat.

Georgia, our guide, must have been a History Major, she knew her stuff and talked, and talked, etc.  Tour groups start every 15 minutes and while in the House, 2 more tour groups came and went.

The seal of Texas.  Remember the Alamo!

When more room had to be built, they went underground to build more office space leaving more room above ground. There are 2 floors below the surface of the ground, and they are sunlit.

There are elevators that go to the underground rooms which have member offices as well as the Supreme Court.

The glass ceilings are surrounded with hedges and unless you were aware, you would not notice them.

A view of the front of the Capitol.

On the grounds around the Capitol were the typical memorials, but also included a miniature Statue of Liberty, the Ten Commandments, Pioneer Woman, Volunteer Firemen, Heroes of the Alamo, and others.

The grounds were expansive with important departments centrally located.  It was one of the better tours we have had.

The Senate and House were not in session.  They only work in odd numbered years and then go back home to their civilian jobs.

Thanks for keeping a lookout for Grammie.
