September 20, 1916 - Carlisle PA

Good evening family and friends.

Our 2nd day on the road took us to some familiar territory.  After leaving Sister Joan and Ron we begrudgingly set out for Route 128 to get to the Mass pike and on through CT, NY, NJ and finally into PA.  We went about 425 miles and settled into at our usual stop at Carlisle Barracks.  The place actually got it's military start in 1757 and has since  transformed from cavalry in the early stages to the Carlisle Indian Industrial School at which notables , Jim Thorpe, Charles "Chief" Bender, Louis Tewanima attended as well as coaches Pop Warner, Vance McCormick and Wallace Denny.  Thorpe won the Decathalon and Pentathalon in the 1912 Olympics.

The Carlisle location included the Army Medical Field School where Medical officers attended.

Its current function is the operation of the Army War College, located here since 1951.

The buildings that we are staying in are some of the quarters used in previous years.  This year we were upgraded to the previously used Commandants quarters.  On the walls hang pictures of Commandants from 1903 to 1994, two of which brandished 3 stars.

After an evening meal at the North Hanover Grille we took a short walk, discovering a different variety of Chestnut.

Just before sundown, Tom got in a longer walk of about 2 miles.  Oh yes, there was a golf course near by.  Who knew?  Tom did.  He said he needed practice carrying the bag.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for Grammie.
